Morrice, MI

Morrice is a village in southwest Shiawassee County, about twenty-five miles northeast of Lansing, named for William Morrice, a Scottish pioneer who arrived in 1837. It sits inside Perry Township, but the village has long had its own civic story. By 1880, Morrice had 229 residents, and in 1884 voters incorporated it as a village because the settlement had grown to the point where it needed elected officers.

Today the center of Michigan is near Morrice, a fun geographic footnote but not the whole town. The village's real markers are Main Street, the downtown development authority, parks, homes, and the Shiawassee countryside around it. The official village history also mentions archaeological digs undertaken by local junior-high students, a nice reminder that the place keeps finding its own past close to home. Morrice is a small township village with a Scottish name, an independent municipal streak, and a location that lands it in Michigan's middle, where village government still matters today.
