Morrill, NE

Morrill lies in the western Nebraska Panhandle at the mouth of the Sheep Creek draw, where early settlers from Fort Collins found a fertile valley in 1886. They first called their settlement Collins, but the railroad's arrival in 1900 shifted the town to the present site, where the Burlington built a turning track and later planned a depot. The village took the Morrill name from Charles Henry Morrill of the Lincoln Land Company and incorporated in 1907.

Water changed the valley as much as rail did. Settlers dug an eight-mile irrigation canal with teams, horses, and hand tools, and later canals helped turn the surrounding land into productive farm country. Potatoes, beans, sugar beets, grain, and livestock built a shipping economy, while schools, churches, and Main Street businesses filled out the town. Original buildings still hold businesses, and Morrill remains tied to irrigation, agriculture, and the wider Scottsbluff area. The local map still makes sense through the old sequence: creek draw, canal, railroad, school, and fields.
