Morris, NY

Morris is a village in Otsego County’s Butternut Valley, where New York State Routes 23 and 51 meet and Butternut Creek bends toward the Unadilla River. The village was founded in 1870, after the older settlement had carried the name Louisville. When Morris incorporated, the new name helped distinguish it from another Louisville in New York. That change is a small example of how the local map was being organized around roads, post offices, and growing valley communities.

Waterpower gave Morris an industrial edge. Butternut Creek powered textile mills, including the Hargrave factory on Lake Street and the Butternuts Wool & Cotton Company below the village. The village’s historic district still carries pieces of that mill-era setting alongside homes, stores, and civic buildings. The 2010 census counted 583 residents. Morris now presents itself as a village in the Butternut Valley, but its older shape remains easy to see: a route junction at the creek, a manufacturing past powered by water, and a name chosen to keep one small New York place distinct from another.
