About Morristown

Morristown began as a 1907 Milwaukee Road station in Corson County, and its name honored Chicago packing executive Nelson Morris, who had run cattle in the territory before the Standing Rock Indian Reservation opened. The railroad turned the town into a shipping point: the 1949 Milwaukee Road Magazine reported that thousands of cattle cars moved out in the years after the line arrived. South Dakota's town directory records a post office from 1908 and incorporation in 1910. Morristown's town form still points back to that rail-and-cattle geography on the reservation's northern landscape.
