Morro Bay's defining view is also working infrastructure. Behind Morro Rock, the city Harbor Department manages 50 slips designated for qualifying commercial fishing vessels and about 125 moorings. Public T-piers accept short-term dockage, and a launch ramp at the south end of the Embarcadero serves trailered boats. Those facilities place fishery operations and recreational boating on the same waterfront as shops and restaurants, while harbor staff also handle emergency response, boater assistance, beach issues, and maintenance. The arrangement makes the Embarcadero more than a sightseeing strip. The estuary becomes easier to explore at Morro Bay State Park. Its Marina Peninsula Trail follows a seven-tenths-mile loop of boardwalk and compacted path with bay and estuary views, and the nearby Museum of Natural History covers geology, oceanography, Native American life, cultural history, and local natural systems.

Black Hill adds a trail through Monterey pines to a broad view over the bay. The 2020-2024 profile showed an older population, with 33 percent of residents age 65 or above. Homeowners occupied 65 percent of homes; the median owner-occupied value was $918,200, median monthly mortgage-holder costs were $3,015, and median gross rent was $1,858. Workers' mean travel time was about 20 minutes. City recreation's 2026 offerings included Junior Guards and a summer children's camp, with scholarships available to young people in the Estero Bay communities. Since June 2025, San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority has operated the city's local fixed route, Call-A-Ride service, and seasonal waterfront trolley.
