Morse, LA

Morse is an Acadia Parish village on Louisiana’s Cajun Prairie, part of the Crowley Micropolitan Statistical Area. The railroad gave it its first shape. When the line pushed south from Midland toward Vermilion Parish in 1896, a station was built here; the community was first known by another name and became Morse on July 1, 1900. The 2020 census counted 599 residents. Its setting is the flat prairie country between Crowley and the coastal parishes, where roads, fields, drainage ditches, and rail routes define the everyday map.

That railroad history helps make sense of Morse’s compact center. The village grew as a stop for people, freight, and farm products, and the surrounding rice-growing country still gives Acadia Parish its working backdrop. Crowley is the nearby larger town and county seat, while Morse keeps its own municipal name and small-scale rhythm. A village this size does not tell the whole story; the place is also a marker of the late-nineteenth-century rail expansion that opened the prairie to settlement and trade. Today, the roads out of town follow the same basic logic: connect the fields and homes to the parish’s larger centers.
