Moscow, TN

Moscow is a Fayette County city in southwest Tennessee, with 572 residents in the 2020 census. Its story starts with the Wolf River: five founders formed the Town Company where the main river meets the North Fork, aiming to make a trading center for southern Fayette County farmers. The city incorporated in 1860 and still sits at a useful crossing between the river, State Route 57, and farm roads leading toward Somerville, Grand Junction, and Collierville. Its name came from Moscow, Russia, through founder J.A. Dilliard’s connection to his wife Alexandra.

Today Moscow carries the county-seat role, with downtown streets, city hall, water and sewer services, and the river close together. The Wolf River gives the city a natural edge, while Route 57 keeps it connected to the larger towns of Fayette County and the Memphis region. Moscow is a small Tennessee city whose map is shaped by a river confluence, a farming hinterland, a nineteenth-century charter, and the county business that gathers around its center.
