Motley, VA

Motley is a rural Pittsylvania County community in south-central Virginia, spread along roads that connect farms, churches, and creek valleys with no formal town center. The name comes from the Motley family, whose Virginia story reaches back to the colonial period; Joseph Motley and his son David James Motley both served in the American Revolution. That history sits alongside a landscape shaped by the Banister River and the nearby old mill sites that once turned water and grain into local industry.

Motley's Mill Dam and Mill Pond, developed as a mill seat by 1785, became a place for milling, fishing, swimming, boating, and baptisms. A roller mill built in 1904–05 operated until 1955, and the site was added to the Virginia Landmarks Register in 2025. There is no dense commercial strip defining Motley today; the community is read through country roads, family names, county services, and the old water-powered places that still give this part of Pittsylvania County a story.
