Mound City, KS

Mound City is the Linn County seat in eastern Kansas, founded in 1855 and named for nearby Sugar Mound, a hill covered with sugar maple trees. During the Civil War, a military post stood here; it was abandoned in June 1865 after the war ended. That combination of courthouse town and frontier-era history still gives Mound City a role larger than its population. Main Street holds the county courthouse and sheriff's office, while roads fan out toward Linn County's smaller communities and farms. The courthouse makes that county connection visible every day.
