About Mound City
Mound City's name came from the small hills that early settlers saw north of town; local accounts preserve both “bachelor mounds” and Indigenous-mounds traditions. Edward C. McIntosh and his father arrived in 1884, the town was platted in 1885, and the county seat moved there from LaGrace in 1888. The Campbell County courthouse still makes Mound City an administrative center, while Lake Campbell northwest of town provides a maintained fishing and picnic site. A museum, community center, volunteer clubs, and seasonal hobby and pancake suppers tie the county seat to local gatherings across the surrounding prairie.
