Mound, MN

Mound sits out on the western edge of Lake Minnetonka, tucked into a maze of bays, channels, and peninsulas. Because much of the city is made up of connected islands and scenic points like Island Park and Three Points, the layout feels very different from a typical Twin Cities suburb. The community got its start as a summer resort hub where streetcar boats ferried visitors into Cooks Bay. When the railroad arrived, commerce moved slightly inland to form the downtown area you see today. History fans will also appreciate that Mound is the original home of Tonka Toys, which manufactured its famous steel trucks right here for decades. Today, the winding shoreline roads and distinct neighborhoods give the whole city an easygoing, tight-knit feel.

What makes Mound unique on Lake Minnetonka is how accessible the water is across the community. Over a century ago, early developers set aside hundreds of shoreline strips known as commons. That legacy lives on through the city's municipal dock program, which allows residents who live off the water to apply for seasonal boat slips. Downtown also borders Lost Lake Harbor, where you can pull up to day-use docks and walk straight to local shops and restaurants. When you want to stay on land, the Dakota Rail Regional Trail cuts right through town, offering miles of paved path for biking and walking. The local stretch is even plowed during winter, making it easy to stay active year-round.

Everyday errands cluster along Shoreline Drive and Commerce Boulevard, which serves as the main commercial strip. Families in town are served by the Westonka School District, sharing well-regarded schools and athletic facilities with neighboring Minnetrista. When house hunting here, the geography is worth keeping in mind. Many peninsula roads are narrow and wind along the water, so getting around often means routing back to the same main thoroughfares. City dock permits also involve a waiting list and do not automatically transfer with a property sale. Even so, with great public beaches, neighborhood parks, and direct water access, Mound gives you a classic Minnesota lake lifestyle right outside your front door.
