About Mount Aetna
At the western base of South Mountain, Mount Aetna is a Washington County census-designated place where Mount Aetna Creek drains toward Beaver Creek. The place has a distinct Seventh-day Adventist school community: Mt. Aetna Adventist School serves elementary and middle-school students, and the neighboring Highland View Academy serves secondary students. The campus story reaches back to 1949, when Mount Aetna Academy opened as a day school; Highland View's boarding phase began in 1967. Roads rise from roughly 500 to 700 feet through a landscape of South Mountain foothills, dolomite, farmland, and solutional caves. The school campus, creek, and mountain base do most of the orienting here. A religious-school community and a limestone mountain landscape meet in the same western Maryland address.
