Mount Charleston, NV

Mount Charleston is an unincorporated Clark County community in the Spring Mountains, about 35 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The 2020 census counted 314 residents. Its namesake, Charleston Peak, rises to 11,916 feet, the highest point in Clark County, and the community sits in a mountain valley reached by State Routes 156, 157, and 158. The landscape changes fast on the drive up from the desert: Kyle Canyon and Lee Canyon bring pine forest, snow, trails, and the small subdivisions that make up the community.

Mount Charleston has a history of Forest Service work and mountain lodging. A sawmill and cabin stood in Kyle Canyon by the late nineteenth century; the Civilian Conservation Corps later used Camp Charleston Mountain, and the former Young Ranch site became the Retreat on Charleston Peak. Today, the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway and nearby trails give the community its everyday connection to the national recreation area. Mount Charleston is part residential hamlet, part mountain resort, and part working forest landscape—a sharply different world from the Las Vegas Valley below.
