Mount Gay-Shamrock, WV

Mount Gay-Shamrock is a Logan County census-designated place with a 2020 population of 1,360, made up of a chain of settlements in narrow Appalachian valleys. Mount Gay sits where Island Creek meets Copperas Mine Fork; Shamrock lies just west in the Copperas Mine Fork valley. Other communities run up Island Creek, Copperas Mine Fork, and Mud Fork, including Black Bottom, Whitman Junction, and Logan Heights. This is a place whose boundaries follow hollows and creek roads more than a single town center.

West Virginia Route 73 follows Mud Fork between US 119 and Logan, while Route 44 climbs south from Mount Gay and Old US 119 follows Copperas Mine Fork toward Holden. Coal history runs through those roads: Gay Coal & Coke opened Logan County's first mine at Mount Gay in 1904, and Mount Gay's post office served nearby communities for decades. Today Logan, the county seat, sits immediately east, giving Mount Gay-Shamrock a direct connection to county services while the valleys preserve the older pattern of clustered coal settlements.
