Tucked into the rolling hills of Montgomery County near the edge of the Uwharrie National Forest, Mount Gilead offers a quiet, slow-paced lifestyle roughly an hour and a half east of Charlotte. Home to around 1,200 residents, it has deep roots in farming, timber, and manufacturing that still shape its hardworking character. A fun local quirk welcomes you right in the center of town: Town Hall operates out of the restored 1930s Gilmont Theater, using the vintage movie marquee to post community announcements and town events.

Everyday activity centers along a walkable historic downtown lined with brick storefronts from the late 1800s and early 1900s. You will find cozy coffee spots, antique stores, art spaces, and a classic general hardware store where neighbors run into each other. Throughout the year, Main Street comes alive with hometown gatherings like the May Day celebration, the Fall Festival, and an evening Christmas parade. For everyday recreation, Stanback Memorial Park provides ballfields, a public swimming pool, picnic shelters, and youth summer activities.

Living in Mount Gilead puts incredible outdoor recreation right in your backyard. Lake Tillery and the Uwharrie National Forest sit just minutes down the road, making it easy to spend weekends boating, fishing, hiking, or camping. Just southeast of town, the Town Creek Indian Mound State Historic Site offers walking trails and a reconstructed village honoring the area's Native American heritage. Back in town, the community garden is even home to a loblolly pine grown from seeds that orbited the moon on the Artemis I mission, adding a unique slice of history to this scenic Piedmont town.
