Mount Gilead, NC

Mount Gilead is a Montgomery County town at the foot of the Uwharrie Mountains, between Charlotte and Greensboro. It began as the Providence settlement and grew first around cotton, then textile mills and factories, and now a timber and sawmill economy. The Town Hall occupies the old Gilmont Theater; its marquee still carries announcements, so the civic building doubles as a visible piece of the town's commercial history. The 2020 population was 1,171.

Downtown is the town's working center. Main Street has antique and secondhand shops, boutiques, coffee, a general store and hardware shop, framing and art businesses, and other small storefronts. Most buildings date from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and local sandstone appears in some door and window sills and lintels. The downtown district entered the National Register in 2005 and keeps those older storefronts in the town's daily frame. The annual May Day celebration, Fall Festival on Main, and December Christmas parade and tree lighting use that same street. Stanback Memorial Park adds baseball fields, a pool, pavilions, and a summer program, while local industry includes electronics, manufacturing, tourism, and sawmills.

Five miles southeast, Town Creek Indian Mound sits on Little River and remains a North Carolina Historic Site devoted to long-running archaeological research and American Indian heritage. The site lies on a tributary of the Great Pee Dee, and its research program has continued for more than half a century. Archaeologists associate the site with the Pee Dee tradition within the wider South Appalachian Mississippian culture. Mount Gilead also tends a loblolly pine grown from seed that traveled around the Moon on Artemis I, linking the town's community garden to a national space program. The historic downtown, the mill-and-lumber economy, Town Creek, and the Moon Tree give this small Piedmont town several different ways to place it on a map.
