Mount Jackson, VA

Mount Jackson is a Shenandoah County town at the meeting of Mill Creek, the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, and the old Valley Turnpike. The 2020 census counted 1,961 residents. Benjamin Allen established a gristmill here by 1746, and the town later grew as a commercial and transportation center when the Valley Turnpike and Manassas Gap Railroad brought traffic through the valley. The historic district still holds the mill-era and railroad-era pattern. I-81 Exit 273 gives the town its apple-basket water tower, while U.S. 11 carries local traffic through downtown.

The North Fork supplies the town's water system, and current town programs include small-business work through the Mount Jackson 5 / The Nest initiative. The Meems Bottom covered bridge and Shenandoah River are nearby, and the town's day-to-day center remains the old road-and-river crossing: shops, town hall, water service, and the streets that grew around the mill. Mount Jackson's local map is still legible from the water and roads outward.
