Mount Laguna, CA

Sitting around 6,000 feet up in eastern San Diego County, Mount Laguna feels worlds away from the coast. Surrounded by the pine forests of the Cleveland National Forest, this quiet mountain community gets crisp alpine air, mild summers, and occasional winter snowstorms that bring a couple of feet of powder. Life here revolves around the outdoors, with miles of scenic trails through big meadows and pine groves, including a popular stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail that draws hikers and mountain bikers throughout the year.

The area has deep roots, starting with the Kumeyaay people who spent summers in the cool mountain meadows for thousands of years. Early conservation efforts established the national forest in 1908, followed by Civilian Conservation Corps projects during the 1930s that shaped the roads, trails, and campgrounds used today. Many of the rustic cabins built in the late 1930s and 1940s still stand beneath the pine trees, giving the neighborhood an unhurried, historic feel that appeals to anyone looking for quiet nights, dark skies, and a slower pace.
