About Mount Lena

Mount Lena is a census-designated place in Washington County, Maryland, with 547 residents in the 2020 census. It lies southwest of Hagerstown near the foot of South Mountain, where Mount Lena Road runs through a landscape of small farms, wooded slopes, and scattered homes. The CDP is part of the rural ring around the county seat, close enough to Hagerstown for daily errands while keeping the mountain edge in view. The road names keep the old mountain geography close to the community.

The Antietam Furnace Complex, an eighteenth-century ironworks site along Mount Lena Road, gives the area a deep industrial past. The furnace produced pig iron, stoves, and household wares in the colonial period, using South Mountain water and timber before the old works became an archaeological site. Today Mount Lena’s roads reach toward Hagerstown, Smithsburg, and the wider Washington County crossroads. Mount Lena is a Maryland community where a ridge road, an old iron furnace, working fields, and South Mountain’s wooded edge meet.
