Mount Pleasant spans all the way from the base of the Ravenel Bridge and Charleston Harbor up to sprawling planned communities near the northern edge of town. Closer to downtown Charleston, you will find historic homes in the Old Village, waterfront dining along Shem Creek, and coastal views at Patriots Point. Heading farther north along Highway 17 and Highway 41, the town shifts into newer family-friendly neighborhoods like Carolina Park and Park West, complete with modern shopping centers, schools, and recreation complexes. Shem Creek serves as the social heart of lower Mount Pleasant, where local shrimpers and weekend crowds share the same waterway. Ever since commercial trawlers first began docking here in the 1930s, the creek has stayed tied to the local fishing trade. Today, you can stroll the boardwalk to watch boats unload the day's catch, rent a kayak alongside resident dolphins, or grab dinner and drinks on a waterside patio as the sun goes down over the marsh. It remains an active working harbor that blends everyday coastal living with some of the best casual seafood spots in the area.

Mount Pleasant also carries deep cultural roots that shaped modern East Cooper communities. Just after the Civil War, freedman carpenter Robert Scanlon organized a cooperative of African American shareholders to purchase land and establish Scanlonville, creating family farms, homes, and eventually Riverside Beach, a storied music venue that hosted legends like Duke Ellington. That proud Gullah Geechee heritage continues throughout the area today, visible in the sweetgrass basketmakers selling their handmade art along Highway 17 and during the annual Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival at Memorial Waterfront Park.

Down at the harbor edge, Patriots Point and Memorial Waterfront Park offer plenty of space to spend an afternoon right beneath the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.
