About Mount Sterling
Mount Sterling is a Van Buren County CDP on high ground overlooking the Fox River. Horace and George Wood laid out the village shortly before 1840, built a sawmill and corn-cracker, and helped create early names including Wood's Mills and Dogtown. The county's historical account places a grade school, old frame church, and a few stores along the hilltop settlement. Mount Sterling's present map still joins mill history, river valley, and a compact village center.
