Mount Vernon, MD

Mount Vernon is a Somerset County CDP on the lower Eastern Shore, occupying the neck of land just south of the Wicomico River. It is not George Washington's Mount Vernon; this one was historically known as the Hungary Neck district, with farms, churches, residences, and river access spread across the peninsula. The Wicomico gives the community its shape and once made the area an anchorage and shipping point, while Mount Vernon Road and the roads toward Deal Island tie it into the rest of Somerset County.

The local map has traditionally been made of small, useful pieces: four churches, a country store, Webster's Cove Marina, and the Mount Vernon Volunteer Fire Company. Grace Episcopal Church and Cemetery, listed on the National Register, adds an older landmark to the shoreline community. With more water than a typical inland CDP and very little of a traditional town grid, Mount Vernon feels like an Eastern Shore crossroads where river travel, church life, and long family histories overlap. The name may be familiar, but the place itself is distinctly Somerset County.
