Southern Mount Vernon balances active commercial districts with a remarkable slice of early American history. Tucked into the area is St. Paul's Church National Historic Site, home to an eighteenth-century stone church and a historic cemetery. The grounds hosted the 1733 election that helped inspire the landmark John Peter Zenger trial, a foundational moment for freedom of the press in America. The church later served as a field hospital during the Revolutionary War, giving residents a fascinating national landmark right down the street.
