Mountain City, GA

Mountain City sits in a gap in the Blue Ridge where U.S. 441 crosses the Eastern Continental Divide at about 2,168 feet. The road’s easy passage through the mountains is the first clue to the town’s character: this is a high-country crossroads, with Rabun County’s ridges rising close on either side and weather that turns distinctly seasonal. The town was incorporated in 1907, but its strongest cultural calling card came later, when students from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School began collecting the voices, crafts, and working knowledge of Southern Appalachia for the Foxfire magazine.

That student project grew into the Foxfire Village Museum and Mercantile, a 100-plus-acre mountainside site beside Black Rock Mountain State Park. Historic cabins and working craft spaces give the collection a physical home, while classes in weaving, blacksmithing, cooking, and other mountain skills keep it active. Mountain City is the kind of place where a pass, a state park, and a museum all belong to the same outing: drive the divide, take in the long Blue Ridge views, then spend time with the tools and stories that once filled these hillsides.
