Mountain City, TX

Mountain City is a Hays County city about 20 miles southwest of Austin and 12 miles north of San Marcos, near the Kyle-Buda corridor. The 2020 census counted 622 residents. The present city is a compact incorporated community on the site of an older settlement, so the name carries two layers. The original Mountain City grew before the Civil War along the old Stagecoach Road as a supply center for ranching and farming. It had stores, churches, a school, a post office, and a stage stop before the railroad's 1880 route between Austin and San Marcos pulled business toward Buda and Kyle. Today's city took shape much later, after the area was selected for a consolidated school serving Buda, Kyle, and Wimberley in the 1970s.

Mountain City incorporated in 1984, and city hall, neighborhood streets, Hays CISD connections, and the surrounding ranch-and-subdivision landscape define the current map. The old settlement sprawled across a much larger area than the modern city limits, which is why local history can sound bigger than the place looks on a drive through. Mountain City is a good example of a Texas community rebuilt around its own name: stagecoach center first, railroad loser later, small city again in the late twentieth century.
