Mountain View, CA (City)

Mountain View sits right in the heart of Silicon Valley, and its tech roots run deep. The city helped launch the modern computing era when early semiconductor pioneers set up shop here in the 1950s. Today, it is famous as the home base for Google and NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, drawing engineers, scientists, and ambitious professionals from around the globe. When you are looking at places to live, Highway 101 serves as the main dividing line. Most residential neighborhoods, quiet tree-lined streets, and schools sit south of the freeway, while the sprawling tech headquarters and waterfront parks stretch along the north. Commuting between the two sides is relatively easy thanks to local shuttles and bike paths, though rush-hour traffic can back up at freeway crossings. The city has approved plans to add thousands of new homes, retail spots, and community parks north of the freeway, but for now, south of 101 is where everyday neighborhood living happens.

Downtown Castro Street is the social center of town. Several blocks of the main strip are closed to car traffic, creating an easygoing pedestrian zone filled with outdoor dining patios, indie coffee shops, and diverse restaurants specializing in everything from authentic ramen to Mediterranean tapas. At the northern end of the street, the downtown transit center connects you to Caltrain and light rail, making trips up to San Francisco or down to San Jose simple. On weekends, the station parking lot hosts a popular farmers market, and you will often see neighbors picking up fresh produce, visiting the local library, or catching a show at the Center for the Performing Arts.

For outdoor recreation, Shoreline at Mountain View offers a scenic escape right along the bay. This vast park features miles of paved walking and biking paths, a tidal wildlife sanctuary, a sailing lake, a golf course, and the popular Shoreline Amphitheatre for outdoor concerts. The Stevens Creek Trail also cuts through town, giving cyclists and runners a dedicated route from residential neighborhoods all the way to the water. Right near the park entrance, the Computer History Museum celebrates the tech innovations that shaped the area. It is an easy place to get outside, stay active, and enjoy the sunny Bay Area weather.
