Mountain Village, AK

Mountain Village sits along the north bank of the Yukon River, tucked against the foot of Azachorok Mountain in western Alaska. The community got its name because it is the first high ground you encounter when traveling up the river from the flat delta plains. While it started out as a seasonal summer fish camp, it has grown into a settled Yup'ik village where traditional ways of life remain strong. Subsistence salmon fishing, hunting, and berry picking across the surrounding tundra still shape the seasonal rhythm for local families.

Education and administration are central to the local economy, as the community serves as the headquarters for the Lower Yukon School District and runs a school for pre-K through 12th grade. Getting around is distinctive for rural Alaska: a local gravel road links Mountain Village to neighboring Pitka's Point and St. Mary's during the summer. For everything else, travel and supplies rely on the small airstrip, summer river barges, and snowmachines once winter freezes over the trails and waterways.
