Muenster, TX

Muenster is a Cooke County city along U.S. 82, about 15 miles west of Gainesville, with the 2020 census counting 1,536 residents. It was founded in 1889 by German Catholic settlers Carl and Emil Flusche, who recruited families from other German communities and gathered them around a church, school, farms, and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. The first Mass, held on December 8, 1889, is still treated as the town's founding moment. That German-Catholic identity is not a museum label here; it shows up in Sacred Heart Church and School, the Muenster Museum, local dairies and farms, and Germanfest.

The spring festival has run for decades with sausages, strudel, music, dancing, competitions, and the unmistakable North Texas version of a German town party.
