Mulberry, NC

Mulberry is a census-designated place in Wilkes County, in the North Carolina foothills where the Blue Ridge slopes settle into rolling Piedmont country. The 2020 Census counted 2,275 residents across about 5.1 square miles. Its landscape is a mix of wooded hills, small valleys, cattle and poultry farms, and scattered homes, with no formal municipal center trying to organize the whole scene. The name reaches back to the first European settlers, who called the area Mulberry Fields for its many mulberry trees; Mulberry Creek still runs through the community's story.

Wilkes County's Mulberry is easy to confuse with a separate Mulberry community in Surry County, but they are different places. Here, the CDP sits near the Mulberry Creek basin and carries the foothill character of the wider county. The creek is one of Wilkes County's larger streams, and the terrain shifts from forest and pasture to the little valleys where houses and farms gather. It is a good example of how a Census place can be a named rural community without a municipal boundary or a compact main street.
