Mullan, ID

Mullan sits at the east end of Idaho's Silver Valley, in a sheltered canyon of the Coeur d'Alene Mountains. Interstate 90 runs along the south side, and Lookout Pass and the Montana line are about six miles east. The town's story begins underground: the Gold Hunter Mine opened in 1884 as a gold prospect that yielded lead and silver, and George Good made another lead-silver strike at the Morning Mine that same year. Mullan took its name from John Mullan, the road builder, gained a railroad connection in 1889, and incorporated in 1904.

Those facts still give a newcomer the clearest map of town. Mullan is part of the Silver Valley corridor, with the highway, mountain canyon, and mining history all visible in a compact setting. The Mullan Museum keeps the local mining story and John Mullan connection in town, and the wider valley's historic mining sites make the surrounding landscape part of the same regional story. Everyday services sit beneath a history shaped by ore, rail, and the pass eastward; Mullan reads as a working mountain town whose location matters as much as its early boom.
