Mullins, SC

Mullins is a Marion County city in the Pee Dee, a railroad-and-farm town whose name is still closely tied to tobacco. The 2020 census counted 4,026 residents. The railroad reached town in 1853, Mullins was formally established in 1872, and tobacco sales began in 1895. At its height, the city had as many as 200 tobacco barns and became South Carolina's largest tobacco market. That is a lot of history for a place whose everyday map still fits around a few main streets.

The South Carolina Tobacco Museum occupies the old depot and keeps the farm story tangible, with exhibits on tobacco, rural work, and life before 1950. The Marion County Library system, Mullins School District 2, and local shops give the city its present-day routine. Mullins's local scoop is a Pee Dee city where the railroad built the frame, tobacco paid the bills, and the old depot now tells the story, with a little grit still showing around the edges.
