Munday, TX

Munday is a Knox County city in north-central Texas, with 1,246 residents in the 2020 census. The community began with a store in 1893 and was first called Maud, after local resident Maud Isbell. When the post office opened in 1894, the town took the name of postmaster R.P. Munday. The city sits at the meeting of U.S. 277, State Highway 222, and Farm Roads 1587 and 2811 in the Knox Prairie.

Railroad growth turned Munday into a county commercial center. The Wichita Valley line arrived in 1906, and gins, grain elevators, cottonseed processing, and produce businesses followed. Irrigation later supported onions, potatoes, cucumbers, melons, and other crops around the town. Munday Consolidated Independent School District and Munday High School keep education at the center of local routines, while the old downtown and highway junction connect Knox County to Abilene and Wichita Falls. Munday is a Texas city where a renamed post office, rail commerce, irrigated fields, and a four-road junction meet.
