Murray, NE

Murray is a Cass County village of 480 residents at the 2020 census, with a name that arrived after the town itself had already started taking shape. The community began as Fairview in the 1880s, then took the name Murray in honor of Reverend George L. Murray, a pioneer pastor. The Missouri Pacific Railroad reached the area as the village was platted in 1891, giving the new settlement a direct reason to exist on the map and a route for people and goods to pass through.

Railroad memories still pop up in ordinary places around Murray. A little house in town once served as the old depot, while an early-1900s fire devastated Main Street and changed the look of the village. Today Conestoga Elementary School and St. John the Baptist Catholic School are part of the local school picture. Murray's story is small-town Nebraska in miniature: a renamed settlement, a railroad that set the pace, and a Main Street that has had to carry both its old memories and its newer life.
