Nahunta, GA

Nahunta is the Brantley County seat in southeast Georgia, part of the Brunswick metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 1,013 residents. U.S. Routes 82 and 301 cross through downtown, giving the city a crossroads role between the coastal plain, Brunswick, and the Georgia–Florida corridor. The Brantley County Courthouse stands at the center of that civic geography, while the surrounding roads run through pine country and scattered farms. The courthouse keeps county history in the daily traffic of downtown.

Nahunta began as a settlement called Victoria around 1870 before taking its present name; the reason for the change has never been settled. Brantley County moved its seat here in the 1920s, and a two-story brick courthouse built in 1930 still serves the county. The Brantley County School District operates five elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. Nahunta is a small courthouse city whose map is defined by two highways, county government, and the long rural roads that feed into downtown.
