Naknek, AK

Naknek’s story runs through the aviation corridor between the Bristol Bay communities of Naknek and King Salmon. The former Naknek Air Base was built in 1941 for the Army Air Corps, then served as a wartime aircraft-storage and refueling stop. The installation was renamed King Salmon Air Station in the 1950s; its runway and remaining federal parcels now sit alongside King Salmon Airport, which is the region’s key air connection. Permanent Air Force personnel left in 1994, leaving an airport landscape with military traces alongside civilian operations.

That history makes sense in the Bristol Bay setting. The Naknek River and Naknek Lake are the geographic references behind the old installation, with Rapids Camp at the river rapids and Lake Camp at the lake’s western end once serving military recreation. In current-day life, aviation and seasonal fishing logistics meet at King Salmon Airport and along the Naknek-King Salmon road. Naknek remains a community oriented toward river, lake, and air connections: boats and aircraft move people, supplies, and fish through a landscape where distances are measured in water and runway time.
