Life in Naknek is closely tied to its neighbor, King Salmon, located about fifteen miles upriver. The two communities share the area's only major paved road, linking the bustling coastal fishing hub with the inland regional airport. King Salmon originally grew around a World War II air station, and that large runway still serves as the main lifeline connecting local residents to Anchorage and the rest of the state.

Summer brings a huge surge of energy as commercial fishermen, cannery workers, and visiting anglers arrive for the legendary Bristol Bay salmon run.
