Nanawale Estates, HI

Nānāwale Estates is a census-designated place in the Puna District of Hawaiʻi County, about a mile east of Pāhoa and 20 miles south of Hilo. The 2010 census counted 1,426 residents. The subdivision began in 1960 and stretches across about 2.2 square miles, bordered by Hawaiian Beaches to the north, Pāhoa to the west, and the Nānāwale Forest Reserve to the south. It is a road-shaped community rather than a conventional town: roughly 37 miles of private roads run through the neighborhood, with three county roads tying it back to the wider Puna network. The Nanawale Community Association is the everyday organizing layer, with membership tied to property ownership and the Longhouse at Nanawale Boulevard and Kehau Road serving as a gathering place.

More than 600 residences are spread through the subdivision, where tropical vegetation, volcanic ground, and the long drive between neighborhoods are part of the lived geography. Pāhoa supplies nearby schools, shops, and town services, while Hawaiʻi County handles the wider public framework. Nānāwale Estates feels distinctly lower-Puna: a large residential subdivision with its own internal roads and community association, sitting between a small town, a forest reserve, and the broader Hilo orbit.
