Nanwalek, AK

Nanwalek is tucked along a quiet lagoon at the southwest tip of the Kenai Peninsula, about 35 miles southwest of Homer and just four miles from neighboring Port Graham. True to its Sugt’stun name, which translates to "place by the lagoon," the village sits between rugged mountains and the waters of lower Cook Inlet. There are no roads connecting Nanwalek to the rest of Alaska. Getting in and out requires a short bush plane flight from Homer or a boat ride across the water. Around town, residents get by on foot, four-wheelers, or snowmachines along dirt trails, while groceries, mail, and larger freight arrive by scheduled air services and seasonal barges.

The village is a Sugpiaq (Alutiiq) community with deep cultural roots and a Russian Orthodox heritage dating back to 1786, when it was established as a fur-trading post called Alexandrovsk. Formerly known on modern maps as English Bay, the community officially reclaimed its traditional name in the 1990s. Today, the historic Russian Orthodox church stands near the center of town, anchoring a close-knit neighborhood where homes overlook the shoreline. Daily necessities and community life revolve around the local school, a small village store, the post office, and the local clinic.

Life in Nanwalek moves with the tides, the weather, and the seasons. Subsistence harvesting is a vital part of daily life, with families spending much of their time fishing for salmon, hunting, and gathering berries along the coast. The local K-12 school operates within the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District and works closely with tribal leaders to integrate Sugt’stun language and traditional knowledge into the curriculum. While Homer provides access to full-scale hospitals, major shopping, and road connections, close family and cultural ties keep Nanwalek closely linked to neighboring Port Graham by skiff and trail. It is a quiet, self-reliant coastal community where daily routines are shaped by the land, the sea, and close neighbors.
