Napakiak, AK

Napakiak is a small Yup'ik village of around 350 residents set along the north bank of the Kuskokwim River, roughly 10 miles southwest of Bethel. Daily life revolves closely around the seasons and the water, with subsistence fishing for salmon, waterfowl hunting, and berry picking shaping both diets and family routines. The local William Miller Memorial School serves roughly 80 students from kindergarten through 12th grade. For major shopping, healthcare, and commercial flights, residents rely on quick trips to Bethel by boat during the ice-free months or by snowmachine along the winter ice road.

Living along the river also requires adapting to its powerful current. Rapid shoreline erosion has washed away large sections of the riverbank in recent years, prompting the community to undertake an ambitious project to move homes and essential utilities back from the water's edge. That effort includes replacing the local school and shifting key facilities to safer ground inland. It is a quiet, self-reliant place where everyday life calls for practical outdoor skills, community cooperation, and a deep respect for the surrounding environment.
