Napoleon, MI

Napoleon is an unincorporated census-designated place in eastern Napoleon Township, Jackson County, Michigan. The 2020 census counted 1,131 residents. The community lies in the county’s southeastern corner, with Jackson’s larger services to the west and the farm roads of the township spreading around it. Napoleon Community Schools give the place its clearest public focus: Napoleon High School, Napoleon Middle School, and Ezra Eby Elementary all serve the local area. The school buildings sit near the heart of the CDP, keeping education visible on the same roads used by farms and township homes.

The school story reaches back to at least 1887, when a local newspaper recorded six high-school graduates. In 1919, Napoleon and four neighboring rural districts voted to consolidate; a new all-grade school opened in 1923 after debates over taxes and construction. Horse-drawn wagons carried students in the early years, before the district bought its first motorized bus in 1924. The CDP is now a compact Jackson County settlement whose name, township, and school district all point to the same rural crossroads.
