Nassawadox, VA

Nassawadox is a town on U.S. Route 13 in Northampton County, on Virginia's Eastern Shore. The 2020 census counted 533 residents. It sits about five miles south of Exmore and 25 miles north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, with the highway separating the Shore's bayside and seaside landscapes. That position gives Nassawadox a distinctly Eastern Shore rhythm: farm fields and small roads to either side, long drives between towns, and the Atlantic and Chesapeake shaping the county from opposite directions.

The Northampton Lumber Company Historic District is the town's standout piece of working history. Its first building went up in 1898, and the complex grew to include a store, sawmill, supply buildings, storage yards, and rail lines. The company produced lumber and barrels for packing and shipping local produce, especially potatoes, and employed a notable share of town residents through the twentieth century. Brownsville is another historic place within the Nassawadox area, while STAR Transit links the town with Cape Charles, Onley, and other Eastern Shore communities. Nassawadox is small, but its story is built around movement: Route 13, produce headed to market, and supplies coming back the other way.
