About Navassa

Navassa is a Brunswick County town across the Cape Fear from Wilmington, where the Brunswick River joins the larger Cape Fear system. The 2020 census counted 1,367 residents. A post office appeared in 1903, and the town took its name from Navassa Island in the Caribbean before incorporating in 1977. Rivers shaped the place from the start: rice, fertilizer, and later creosote moved through the port network, and the old industrial footprint still matters to the town's story. Navassa also carries one of the Lower Cape Fear's clearest Gullah Geechee threads, rooted in Black families whose ancestors worked the rice plantations along the river.

That history sits alongside churches, neighborhoods, marshes, and the Sturgeon Creek crossing on the road into town. Wilmington is right across the water, while Brunswick County's beaches and Southport pull trips in the other direction. Navassa's local scoop is a river town with a Caribbean name, a deep African American heritage, and an industrial past that still shapes how people talk about the place.
