About Nebo

Nebo is a McDowell County CDP with a name that arrived by railroad but started at a Methodist campground. The Western North Carolina Railroad named its depot Nebo, and the community incorporated in 1909 before its charter was repealed in 1943. The old town's physical traces include the Nebo Historic Springbox, while Lake James State Park spreads along the lake three miles northeast. U.S. 70 runs through the community toward Marion and Morganton, giving Nebo a clear road-and-water layout. It is western North Carolina in a compact story: campground name, railroad depot, springbox, and a big lake shaping the edges.
