Necedah, WI

Necedah is a Juneau County village inside the Town of Necedah, set among central Wisconsin’s wetlands, sand country, and forest roads. The village had 916 residents in the 2020 census, but the places around it carry a much larger footprint. Necedah National Wildlife Refuge preserves an ancient exposed lakebed shaped by Glacial Lake Wisconsin, with oak savannas, sand prairies, wetlands, and the Little Yellow River. The refuge was set aside in 1939 after its importance to migratory birds drew national attention.

Visitors and residents use the refuge for hiking, snowshoeing, fishing, hunting, wildlife watching, photography, and seasonal field trips; the visitor center sits north of town on Headquarters Road. The Necedah Shrine and Petenwell Rock add two very different destinations to the wider map, while Necedah Airport serves local aviation and surrounding communities. Village services and town government handle the ordinary work, and the refuge supplies the landscape that shapes weekends, school outings, and the local calendar. The visitor center helps turn a broad refuge into a place people can learn by going.
