Neillsville, WI

Neillsville is Clark County’s seat, set along the Black River and US 10/State 73. The first European settler, James O’Neill, came around 1845 looking for a sawmill site, while the Ojibwe were the earliest known residents of the area. Two of the city’s best-known historic places are the 1897 Clark County Jail, now a museum, and the Reed School, also preserved as a museum. West of town, The Highground veterans memorial park adds a different kind of landmark, with memorials spread across a large hillside site. The local shorthand is county-seat work, river timber history, and a town that keeps its past in museums and memorials.
