Nelson Lagoon, AK

Nelson Lagoon is a tiny coastal community of around forty people perched on a narrow spit of sand along the Alaska Peninsula, caught between the open Bering Sea and a sheltered lagoon. Daily life out here is quiet, rugged, and closely tied to the water, with commercial salmon fishing supporting most families throughout the summer. Living in such an isolated spot takes serious self-reliance, with groceries, mail, and travel all depending on small planes landing on the local gravel runway. It is an exceptionally tight-knit place where neighbors look out for one another against the backdrop of windswept tundra and wild ocean.
