Neoga, IL

Neoga is a Cumberland County city whose name comes from the Kickapoo word for deer. Its legal birthday is June 16, 1856, when the original plat was recorded, and the town grew almost immediately around the Illinois Central Railroad station established the year before. The original twenty-block town straddled the tracks, with the railroad’s land grant on one side and the Bacon and Jennings Addition on the other. That layout is still the key to reading Neoga: this was a prairie settlement pulled into the modern world by a depot, then filled in with homes, stores, churches, and civic buildings.

The rail line remains the central historical thread, but present-day Neoga has the working-town mix of schools, library, park space, utilities, and local businesses. Jennings Park carries the name of one of the original additions and hosted the city’s centennial and sesquicentennial gatherings. Neoga CUSD 3 runs the local elementary, junior high, and high school, while Lake Land College serves the wider east-central Illinois area.
