Neshanic, NJ

Neshanic is a Somerset County census-designated place within Hillsborough Township, near the South Branch Raritan River. Dutch farmers began settling here around 1750, and the early village gathered a church, school, gristmill, and tavern around the roads near the river. The name reaches back to Lenape people associated with the Raritan, so the place carries both an Indigenous river history and a colonial farming history in a compact setting.

The Neshanic Historic District centers on Amwell and Zion Roads and includes 23 contributing structures, while Neshanic Mills along the South Branch preserves the later mill landscape. The old buildings are still the clearest local landmarks; the mill, church, roads, and farms show how the village formed before suburban Hillsborough spread around it. Fields and farm lanes still open around the historic center. Neshanic is a small river village whose current map still turns on historic buildings and the South Branch, with township services and larger commercial centers elsewhere in Hillsborough.
