Ness City, KS

Ness City is the county seat of Ness County, Kansas, set among the broad fields and dry grasslands of the central High Plains. Founded in 1878, the city grew when the railroad arrived in 1886, giving the county's farms and ranches a shipping point and giving the town a durable place on the regional map. Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue still form the civic center.

The Old Ness County Bank Building, completed in 1890, rises four stories in stone and is known locally as the Skyscraper of the Plains. Its arched windows, corner spires, vaults, and former bank rooms make it an unusually elaborate landmark for a small prairie city. That building gives downtown its strongest visual landmark on the prairie. Ness City USD 303, Sacred Heart School, county offices, local businesses, and highway traffic keep the center active through the seasons. Ness City is a Kansas county-seat town where rail-era ambition remains visible in a stone building above the plains.
