Nevis, MN

Nevis is a city in Hubbard County where Highway 34 meets the Heartland State Trail, the 49-mile rail-trail running between Park Rapids and Cass Lake. The 2020 census counted 377 residents. The trail's Nevis access sits near County Road 18 and Village Road, putting the town on a north-central Minnesota route used for biking, hiking, snowmobiling, and other trips through lake country. For a place that began as a railway village, that old transportation line still shapes how people arrive and move through town.

Nevis separated from Nevis Township and incorporated in 1921 after its post office opened in 1899. The local calling card is the Nevis Tiger Muskie, a 30-foot sculpture celebrating a fish native to the surrounding waters; Muskie Days each July build a summer calendar around that theme. The Louis J. Moser House, once used as a fishing camp, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Between the trail, the highway, the lake-country setting, and the outsized fish on the edge of town, Nevis has a clear personality even at a few hundred residents.
