New Baltimore, NY

New Baltimore is the primary hamlet in Greene County’s Town of New Baltimore, looking across the Hudson River from the northeastern corner of the county. The hamlet sits where the river, Hannacrois Creek, New York Route 144, and the Thruway corridor meet, with Coeymans across the county line to the north. Its historic core is gathered around Main Street, local side streets, and the New Baltimore Hamlet Historic District, a compact record of houses, churches, and older businesses.

New Baltimore’s earliest settlement dates to at least 1713, and the town was carved from Coxsackie in 1811. River traffic later gave the hamlet a working waterfront: steamboats linked it with Albany, Hudson, and other Hudson River ports, while a hotel and business district grew around the square. The river is less of a commercial highway now, but it still sets the view and the scale. New Baltimore remains a Hudson Valley hamlet where a historic center, a creek, and a broad stretch of water all meet within the same compact center.
