New Berlin, NY

New Berlin is a village on the Unadilla River at the eastern edge of Chenango County, where the river also marks the Otsego County line. The town was formed in 1807, and the village was incorporated in 1816. Earlier industry gathered along the water: an 1869 account names a paper mill, tannery, brewery, iron foundry, shops, and an academy. That river setting still gives the village its shape, with Great Brook and the surrounding rolling hills leading into the wider Susquehanna watershed.

The village's historic district includes 122 residential and commercial properties. Preferred Manor, built in 1831, is listed on the National Register as an Underground Railroad site, and Preferred Mutual Insurance Company keeps its corporate home in New Berlin. Today, the village library and New Berlin Art Forum offer local cultural programming, while Unadilla Valley Central School lies about two miles south and serves New Berlin and South New Berlin. Milford Academy is also based in the village, and Hunts Pond State Park adds camping, fishing, and a boat launch nearby.
